The North Shore Rat Club had it's first meeting this past January 2008. We have high hopes for this club and believe it will expand in members as time goes on! Joshua and I are the proud owners of ten rats, eight girls and two boys.
Prior to owning rats, neither of us knew much about them. I had always viewed them as pests and was quite scared of them. Though I will admit I am still scared of the non-domesticated ones, we have both fallen in love with pet rats!!!
It all started a few years ago when Joshua was looking into adopting a cat from a shelter. I love all animals, but being a bird owner for most of my adult life, I was not fond of the idea of adopting a cat at that point. I was too nervous that the cute kitty would attack my birds when I wasn't home. Joshua's birthday was rapidly approaching and I was still without any ideas of what to get him.
As I contemplated what to surprise him with, he became more and more interested in the kitty. Then it came to me - what about a pet rat! I remembered how much he enjoyed holding one at a past fair we had attended in Salem. A woman came over to us with her son and had a big white rat, two to be exact. That was our first contact with a pet rat, and all I could remember is how surprised we were at how friendly and sweet the two were.
So off I went a couple of days later to see about purchasing a rat. That is where I saw our first rat "Brisby". She was so cute! I knew once I held her that she not only was the answer to my problem, but that we would both fall in love with her. When I got home, I gave her to Josh and they became best buds instantly. From that point on, we had a totally new perspective on rats!
Josh and I always love talking about our pets and by doing so realized that there are a lot of people on the North Shore that own rats. If you are also a rat enthusiast, we invite you to join this unique club!!!
